Aquaculture news from around the globe

AUSTRALIA - New Off-shore aquaculture lease proposed for Port Stephens

CANADA - Another day another virus scare
Apparently Alexandra Morton is now claiming the farmed fish she bought at T&T Supermarkets shows evidence of some new virus.
How come it only takes four women with shopping carts to find it, she crows on her blog.
We answer with this: maybe only she is finding these things because they are in her imagination. She is wrong, and practicing bad science, and not really finding anything, just like Bigfoot ‘experts’ and UFO hunters.
But like those cranks, she sure knows how to get the media’s attention.
Strangely enough we cannot find the lab report for this. Ms Morton?

U.K. - Durham University achieves MSC standard following certification by Food Certification International
Durham University has become the first independent catered academic institution in the UK to achieve the Marine Stewardship (MSC) Chain of Custody Standard following an assessment by Food Certification International (FCI), the independent accredited certification body.
The MSC certification means that students in all 11 catered colleges of Durham University now have the option to choose independently certified sustainable fish for the first time for their meals. Each of the new MSC-Eco labelled menu items can be traced back to an independently certified, sustainable fishery, enabling Durham students to make an informed choice and help support the sustainable fishery market.

Initial Observations on the Inclusion of High Protein Distillers Dried Grain into Rainbow Trout Diets
Michael E. Barnes, Michael L. Brown and Kurt A. Rosentrater
An initial investigation into the inclusion of high protein distillers dried grain with solubles (HPDDG) in juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss diets was conducted during a 36-day feeding trial. Four experimental diets containing either 10% or 20% HPDDG with supplemental amino acids, and either with or without phytase, were compared to a fish-meal-based, non-HPDDG, diet. The results suggest that HPDDG, if supplemented with essential amino acids, may be included at concentrations of at least 20% (dry weight) in rainbow trout diets and that more detailed investigation into the use of HPDDG is warranted.
