May 29, 2004

The Board of IFFO has appointed Jonathan Shepherd as the new Director General of IFFO.  Mr Shepherd will join IFFO on the 1st June 2004 as Joint Director General and will take over as Director General on the 1st October 2004 in succession to Stuart Barlow, who remains as Joint Director General during the intervening period.

Jonathan Shepherd, a British national aged 57, has spent 30 years in the aquaculture industry in UK, Spain, and Denmark.  Aquaculture feed is now the main market for fishmeal and fish oil.  He moves to IFFO from BioMar, the global fish feed producer based in Denmark, where he was Group Managing Director.  He is a qualified veterinarian with a PhD in aquaculture economics.

Mr Shepherd, married and living in London, will be based at the organisation’s headquarters in St Albans, UK, but will spend much of his time travelling to meet Producer Members and Associated Members in 34 countries.

“I am looking forward to the challenge and operating in different cultural environments”, he said, “I see the big issues facing the industry as underlining the sustainability of the fish resource, the efficient use of this resource to bring vital omega-3 and other nutrition benefits to the consumer, and ensuring the quality and safety of these two essential components of the feed and food chain.”
