Whole insect-based feed to be tested in pilot demonstration trout farm
Wednesday, April 27, 2022
Genufeed and Italian insect producer, BEF Biosystems, will launch a first pilot demonstration on a trout farm in Luserna San Giovanni, in Turin, Italy. The farm will showcase the technologies of both companies in action.
The fish at the farm will be fed with BEF Biosystems whole BSF larvae reared in the company’s Casalnoceto farm and coated with Genufeed’s proprietary enrichment coating.
BEF Biosystem’s modular patented insect rearing machines are highly efficient for productivity and energy saving. They can operate in any environment, in open fields or unheated environments. The environmental parameters are remotely controlled at regular intervals and are set in such a way as to create the ideal conditions for the growth of black soldier fly larvae. The substrate used in the Casalnoceto farm is sourced from local agricultural and food processing operations, solving a major challenge of treating organic byproducts effectively while recovering and upcycling its protein.
Genufeed’s unique nutritional enhancement technology uses the insect larvae whole and intact. It adds a coating layer that complements any missing essential nutrients, such as omega-3s, certain amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Fish are fed the coated larvae whole and receive a complete diet optimized for best growth and health performance.
The demonstration farm, located in the Italian Alps, is the first of Genufeed’s demonstration farms set in different countries worldwide. Each demonstration farm will focus on Genufeed’s core competencies: performance, sustainability, and price. Genufeed offers a new way to feed farmed fish with a net positive impact on the environment, completely independent of world commodity prices.
