ADM pledges new deforestation targets

Wednesday, April 27, 2022

As part of global Earth Day celebrations, ADM announced a commitment to achieve 100% deforestation-free supply chains by 2025, five years earlier than previously targeted. The accelerated timeline applies to direct and indirect sourcing of all commodities from every country in ADM’s supply chain.

“Our goal is to end deforestation in the shortest time possible, and the new target date for deforestation-free sourcing demonstrates our ongoing commitment to sustainable, ethical and responsible production,” said chief sustainability officer, Alison Taylor. “Every day, we seek to build a more resilient and sustainable food system that protects forests, safeguards biodiversity, and supports communities.”

ADM is on track to achieve its traceability goals in soy supply chains in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina by the end of 2022.

Q1 2022 results

ADM reported financial results for Q1 2022. The company expects reduced crop supplies, caused by the weak Canadian canola crop, the short South American crops, and the disruptions in the Black Sea region, to drive continued tightness in global grain markets for the next few years.

“Longer term, markets continue to reflect the importance of the enduring global trends that are fueling performance across our portfolio by driving demand for our products. And within ADM, our productivity and innovation efforts are continuing to help us deliver on the evolving needs of our customers. Considering these factors, we expect 2022 results to exceed 2021's,” said Chairman and CEO Juan Luciano.

Ag Services & Oilseeds delivered substantially higher year-over-year results, effectively managing risk and executing exceptionally well in a dynamic environment of robust global demand and tight supply, driven primarily by the short South American crop, to deliver substantially higher year-over-year results.

Animal Nutrition profits were nearly double a year ago, due primarily to strength in amino acids, which was driven by a combination of product mix changes, improved North American demand and global supply chain disruptions.
