Join EFSA workshop on circular future and emerging feed sources

The workshop aims to identify emerging issues and risks associated with novel and more sustainable feed sources and technologies that will be further characterized by EFSA.

Join EFSA workshop on circular future and emerging feed sources
May 12, 2022

EFSA is running a two-year pilot project aimed at identifying emerging risks to food, feed and environmental safety, in the transition to a sustainable circular economy, in a holistic and integrated fashion. More specifically, the project aims to gather and evaluate the evidence for vulnerabilities of a circular economy for food/feed safety, plant, animal and the environment based on an extensive literature search and explore possible synergies, opportunities and challenges for integrated approaches for the identification and characterization of emerging risks for food safety and the environment.

Following the publication of the report on the outcome of the extensive literature search, EFSA has decided to focus the next steps of the pilot project on emerging feed sources and technologies. This event occurs in the context of a foresight participatory process in which stakeholders will be engaged in supporting the identification of future trends and technologies that may drive the emergence of risks for feed safety and animal health in the transition to a circular economy.

Objectives of the meeting

The overall goal of the event is to identify new hazards, exposure pathways or knowledge gaps to be further explored, focusing on three relevant circular economy practices – food waste, former food products and food processing byproducts – in order to prioritize future work to protect humans, animals, and the environment.

At the workshop, participants will jointly discuss and identify:

  • New sources and technologies of feed
  • Future trends, drivers, inhibitors, and challenges
  • Future vulnerabilities and risks
  • Risk heat maps

The outcome of the workshop will be a list of emerging issues and risks associated with novel and more sustainable feed sources and technologies that will be further characterized by EFSA in cooperation with its partners’ network.

The foresight event will run online, and it will be professionally facilitated to enable an open exchange among participants. The event is open to policymakers, practitioners and stakeholders from along the feed value chain, as well as scientists and experts in emerging risks identification, risk assessment and foresight who will be selected among the registrants.

You can register here by May 16, 2022. To ensure a balanced representation of all stakeholder groups and a fruitful discussion, participation in the workshop will be limited.
