Hamlet Protein to build US production plant

Danish specialist protein company, Hamlet Protein A/S is to build a major feed ingredient production facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The multi-million dollar project will create more than 25 jobs in its first phase.

Hamlet will initiate the project in the spring of 2008, pending construction and environmental permits. The facility is sceduled to be operational in 2009.

"Hamlet products have been a success story across the world, with sales in more than 50 countries and we believe the U.S. specialty feed market is now ready for our unique, high quality soy proteins. Initial customer contacts have been very encouraging", said parent company managing director Ole Kaae Hansen.

The Cedar Rapids location was chosen for the company's first operation outside Denmark after a thorough evaluation of competing sites. The state of Iowa is the heartland of both soy and pig production and the city of Cedar Rapids was an outstanding candidate due to its advantageous location and focus on bio-processing industries.

The company said the investment should be seen in the context of the corporate strategy of continuous and significant expansion, both geographically and organically and also in terms of new product development. In addition to serving the U.S. feed market, the production facility will be an obvious platform for export to the Americas and other dollar-related economies.

Hamlet Protein A/S was founded in1992 as a Danish shareholding company with the scope of upgrading soy and other vegetable raw materials by innovative, proprietary bio-processing. Hamlet has  grown to become a leading world-wide provider of value-added vegetable protein solutions for young animal feed.Key application areas are piglet feed, calf milk replacers and petfood as well as aquafeed.
