As of November 30, in the second Peruvian anchovy fishing season, 987,428 metric tons have been caught, of which 310,305 MT (31%) are juveniles, according to an official Imarpe report.
Fishermen have also been reporting that the sizes of anchovies are small, between 7 and 16 cm, local news reported.
Ana María Choquehuanca, head of the Ministry of Production (Produce), said that “the quota will not be reviewed because the resolution has already been issued and the resolutions are supported by Imarpe.”
Imarpe report presents four scenarios: unfavorable, neutral unfavorable, neutral and favorable, and from those four, one of the scenarios is chosen. “Currently being faced with El Niño, we have opted for the unfavorable scenario that Imarpe indicates as a ‘strong Niño type’, but applying an exploitation rate of 0.31, equivalent to a quota of 1,682,000, which is what it has been assigned,” Choquehuanca said.
