India fishmeal industry have been on an indefinite strike since August 1 in protest against collecting GST from fishmeal and related products. According to local news, fishmeal and related products used in shrimp feed were made taxable at five percent during an initial GST notification. Afterwards they were shifted to the list of exempted items, but in the end, authorities announced that they will collect taxes in retrospective effect from fishmeal producing companies. According to the All India Fish Meal and Oil Manufacturers and Merchants Association, the fishmeal industry would be seriously affected.

56 fishmeal industrial units in Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are on an indefinite strike demanding GST exemption.
