Highlights from Asian Pacific Aquaculture 2017

The Asian Pacific Aquaculture 2017 conference, held last month in Malaysia, featured 37 sessions on aquaculture, including nutrition and aquafeeds, marine shrimp, tilapia, and freshwater fish culture. The event was attended by approximately 3,000 participants from 46 countries, with 87% coming from Asia.

The Asian Pacific Aquaculture 2017 (APA17) conference and exhibition was held from July 24th to July 27th, 2017 at the Putra World Trade Center (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

APA17 was attended by approximately 3,000 participants from 46 countries, with 87% coming from Asia. Others were from USA, Canada and South America (137) and from Europe (75). There was a total of 444 abstracts with 325 oral presentations and 119 posters with 37 sessions.

At the trade show, there were more than 170 booths. Exhibitors were from 20 countries led by Malaysia, Singapore, USA, Thailand and Taiwan. Products on display included complete feeds, feed ingredients and additives, health and diagnostic services, farming equipment and electronics, cages, tanks, liners, nets, pipes and fittings etc.

APA17 was the annual meeting of the Asian Pacific Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society. It was jointly organized by the Malaysian Fisheries Society (MFS), Universiti Putra Malaysia, and World Aquaculture Society. It was hosted by the Department of Fisheries (DOF), Ministry of Agriculture and Agro Based Industry, Malaysia.

The plenary session on July 25 started with a presentation by Mr. Herve Lucien-Brun, Aquaculture & Qualite from France, titled \"Marketing of farmed seafood from Asia to global markets\". The second plenary was given by Dr. Mazuki Bin Hashim, Senior Director of Fisheries Biosecurity Division for the Department of Fisheries Malaysia who presented “Transforming the Aquaculture industry in Malaysia. The opening ceremony, jointly organized by DOF and MFS, was attended by farmers and members of the various aquaculture industry in Malaysia. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Malaysia, Dato Nogeh Anak Gumbek opened APA 17 conference and trade show.

APA17 had 37 sessions on aquaculture, including nutrition and aquafeeds, marine shrimp, tilapia, freshwater fish culture, and a post conference farm tour. More than 30 participants joined the post conference tour organized by MFS to visit cage culture activities on Pulau Ketam, a land-based grouper hatchery and a shrimp farm.

APA2018 will be held in Taipei International Convention Center, April 23 – 26, 2018 in Taipei, Taiwan.
