More than 400 delegates are already registered for the 2011 Annual Conference of the International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organisation on October 16-20, 2011.  IFFO will hold this event for the fifth time in Lima, capital city of the world’s leading fishmeal producing nation, Peru.

The conference theme, The role of marine ingredients in feeding the world, reflects the global nature of an industry whose first hand sales value of fishmeal and fish oil worldwide is currently around $8 billion.

Director General Jonathan Shepherd will chart the fishmeal sector’s rapid development from an inward-looking industry supplying ingredients for land animal feed and margarine to an integral part of responsible value chains for aquaculture and healthy omega-3 oils.

Both Professor Frank Asche of the University of Stavanger and Duncan Leadbitter of Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) will speak on industry challenges in Asia.  Asche will focus on how the rising demand for fish in a more affluent Asia can be addressed and Leadbitter will speak on improving the sustainability of fisheries in South East Asia.

Subjects for other major papers over the three conference days are: the Peruvian fishmeal industry; the bigger picture on food and fisheries by UN FAO and the World Bank; climate change by Bjørn Lomborg; building a positive public image for salmon farming by Mary Ellen Walling of British Columbia Salmon Producers; and the latest developments in markets for healthy omega-3 from fish oil by Adam Ismail of the GOED Omega-3 trade association.
