Sixth Aquaculture Roundtable Series (TARS 2016) to address emerging diseases and future of Asia's shrimp industry

TARS 2016 provides a neutral platform for key stakeholders to convene and exchange insights and experiences as to how Asia, as a unified group, can reconcile to increase its sphere of control in disease mitigation. This year’s two-day meeting will feature state-of-the science plenary sessions with 16 presentations by local and international speakers, and three interactive breakout sessions.

The Aquaculture Roundtable Series (TARS) 2016: Shrimp Aquaculture & the New Normal, taking place in Phuket, Thailand from August 17-18, 2016 is a follow-up to the TARS 2014 meeting that focused on the recovery, revival and renaissance of Asia’s shrimp aquaculture.

TARS 2016 provides a neutral platform for key stakeholders to convene and exchange insights and experiences as to how Asia, as a unified group, can reconcile to increase its sphere of control in disease mitigation. It will bring to focus, new management tools and production techniques, updates on research and development, and innovative business models that can be adopted.

The two-day meeting aims to take the industry to a New Normal through better management and control of all the variables in shrimp farming in the fight against diseases with a view towards the long-term sustainability of production, commercial viability, environmental impact and bioconversion efficiencies.

This year’s meeting will feature state-of-the science plenary sessions with 16 presentations by local and international speakers, and three interactive breakout sessions. Presentation Highlights

• Robins McIntosh will address trends, challenges and opportunities to move Asia’s shrimp industry towards intensification with higher efficiencies.

• Victoria Alday-Sanz will look at genetics and sanitary status and production with SPF and SPR/SPT stocks.

• Ravikumar Yellanki will explore the potential for the second phase of growth for the India’s farmed shrimp industry.

• Anwar Hassan will share lessons learnt from Indonesia’s shrimp farming mitigating strategies to overcome the IMNV outbreak successfully.

• Kallaya Sritunyalucksana will report on the progress of research on current and emerging shrimp diseases, and their implications on the future of shrimp aquaculture.

• Kabir Chowdhury will review nutritional solutions available to the shrimp industry in dealing with deadly diseases.

• Andy Shinn will focus on the lost billions in Asia shrimp aquaculture production due to disease outbreaks, and the significance of biosecurity and farm strategies for better control and management.

• Vincent Percier & Phillipe Sourd will lay down the foundations for a stable shrimp industry with supply chain and ingredient excellence.

• Celia R Lavilla-Pitogo will discuss managing EHP and production planning to maximize output

• Robby Mort will describe production of Penaeus monodon in MRAS, a cost effective model for controlled production in China

TARS 2016 will also introduce Hard Talk with Shrimp Farmers – a dialogue session with hard-hitting questions on farming models, challenges and success with disease mitigation.

TARS 2016, organized by Aqua Culture Asia Pacific and Corporate Media Services, and supported by Department of Fisheries of Thailand is expected to draw 200 participants representing the industry and key stakeholders from the region.
