On January 22, 2025, the workshop Animal Health: Prevention, Control and Management of Diseases was held at the Hilton Hotel, in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Organized by the Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP), the workshop is part of the SustainED training program which focuses on promoting the sustainable development of the shrimp industry in Ecuador. The program emphasizes sustainability principles in shrimp farming, guaranteeing the protection and conservation of the environment, social and animal welfare, and the delivery of a healthy and high-quality product to consumers.
A key topic addressed in the workshop was antimicrobial resistance, a critical issue for both the shrimp industry and public health. As part of its commitment to antibiotic-free aquaculture, SSP shared strategies, solutions, and best practices from its founding members, associate members, and industry stakeholders to help prevent, control and manage shrimp diseases.
The workshop featured eight sessions, including a presentation from ADISSEO SAS on Improving shrimp health and production performance through the application of feed additives. Presented by Gilberto Hernández-Gonzalez, regional manager of aquaculture in Latam, the session highlighted the importance of using functional additives in shrimp production to reduce the impact of diseases in a responsible and sustainable way. Gilberto also shared strategies in the application of feed additives to enhance effectiveness and increase the profitability of crops, presenting field results on current challenges faced by shrimp farmers.
The event brought together around 100 industry professionals, all of them related to the shrimp industry: producers, feed manufacturers, consultants, and suppliers, among others, providing a platform to exchange experiences and reinforce best practices in the sector.
