China launched the world’s largest salt-light solar power station, local news reported. It combines solar energy with salt production and shrimp farming.
The solar plant in Tianjin is built on a giant salt farm. It uses double-sized solar panels to absorb sunlight from above as well as sunlight reflected by the saltwater below. It has a capacity of 1GW, enough to power 1.5 million homes.
Shrimp are cultivated in the brine underneath and the solar panels could be helpful for shrimp farmers since the shade they provide cools the water below.
At 13 km2, the power station is the largest of its kind in the world. China has pledged to double renewable capacity by 2030.
