Phibro Animal Health Corporation unveiled the approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of PAQFLOR® broad-spectrum antibiotic, a 50% (500 g/Kg) florfenicol premix indicated for use in freshwater-reared salmonids, catfish, freshwater-reared finfish and warmwater finfish.

Mike Brown, vice president of Mineral Nutrition & Aqua, North America, stated in a press release, “We are excited to further support the U.S. aquaculture industry’s efforts to reach its production and sustainability goals by bringing to market a proven, cost-effective, florfenicol antimicrobial product. We share our customers’ commitment to improving productivity through good health management practices. By bringing PAQFLOR to market, Phibro is giving producers more health management options.”

Todd Armstrong, president, North America, said that “having a new aquaculture product in the U.S. allows Phibro to continue our mission of providing safe and effective solutions for our customers’ unique health challenges.”

PAQFLOR® broad-spectrum antibiotic inhibits bacteria by interfering with protein synthesis. It is approved for the following species.

Freshwater-reared salmonids:

  • For the control of mortality due to furunculosis associated with Aeromonas salmonicida.
  • For the control of mortality due to coldwater disease associated with Flavobacterium psychrophilum.

Freshwater-reared finfish:

  • For the control of mortality due to columnaris disease associated with Flavobacterium columnare.

Catfish:

  • For the control of mortality due to enteric septicemia of catfish associated with Edwardsiella ictaluri.

Freshwater-reared warmwater finfish:

  • For the control of mortality due to streptococcal septicemia associated with Streptococcus iniae.

PAQFLOR® is administered at a dose rate of 10-15 mg/kg body weight per day of florfenicol for 10 days. PAQFLOR can be found in both Canada and the USA. In Canada, it was launched last year under the name PAQ Flor.
