The Peruvian government is to invest more than USD 21.8 million to develop the Centre for Technological Innovation Aquaculture (CITE) in Lima and is committed to creating 47 Technological Innovation Centres across the country to help increase the supply, productivity and quality of fishery products for domestic consumption and the international market.
Aquaculture currently supplies the domestic market with products valued at USD 153.4 million and the government sees huge potential in the sector for economic growth. The latest investment is being injected under a new National Productive Diversification Plan.
Aquaculture currently represents less than 5 per cent of national fish production, whilst in other countries it contributes about 50 per cent.
