CP to build aquafeed plant in the Philippines
Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Co. Ltd. is investing P2.36 billion for the production of aquafeed in Capas, Tarlac, the Philippines.
The aquafeed mill will be located on an 8 to 10-hectare area along the national highway in Capas, Tarlac. Comprising of four production lines for aquafeeds, the facility has existing power lines and abundant underground water. The 114,000 tonnes per year capacity feedmill will produce fish and shrimp feeds in various forms (pelletized, crumbled and extruded) using the latest machinery and equipment acquired from China and Europe. The project will employ 209 people and will start commercial operation in January 2011.
CPF also plans to erect a shrimp feedmill in Cebu, a promoted economic zone, with a production capacity of 30,000 tons per year, as well as a pig-farming operation in Luzon, where it will start raising 1,200 pedigree animals, eventually leading to 10,400 breeding pigs.
The aquafeed mill in Tarlac is viewed as a boost to the tremendous potential of aquatic production in the country and the revival of the shrimp industry in particular, since Charoen Pokphand has the cost-efficient technology to produce quality feeds.
White shrimp is being groomed as the next sunrise industry in aquaculture.
Global shrimp production is dominated by white shrimp with nearly 80 percent share and Asian countries contribute nearly 75 percent to such production.
