Kenya’s Fisheries Principal Secretary, Micheni Ntiba, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with nine counties to boost fish farming in the country. Ntiba asked counties benefiting from the World Bank-funded aquaculture program to set aside monies to ensure the project does not collapse. The project is already operational in six counties and aims to start in Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Machakos, Kajiado, Kiambu, Busia, Siaya Kisii and Kisumu counties.

Kenya produces 400,000 tons of fish annually and aims to increase up to 750,000 tons, according to local news. The government is betting on the commercialization of aquaculture to encourage fish production beyond the lakes and increase consumption.
