A Finnish firm is planning to set up an aquafeed plant in Lagos, Sate Commissioner for Agriculture and Co-operatives, Gbolahan Lawal, annouced. Speaking at a press conference in Alausa, Mr Lawal said a Chinese firm and an American company had shown interest in establishing aquafeed mills in the state also.

Last month Akin-Sateru Farms opened an extruded aquafeed mill for the production of floating fish feed, making Nigeria the first country in Africa to boast such a facility.The 12 tonn/day plant will help local farmers reduce imported feed. 

“We entered into discussions with Insta-Pro and with series of communications, culminating into a visit of Mr. Karl Arnold, vice president of the company, as well as subsequent visits to U.S.A. and Mexico, we purchased a comprehensive plant for the production of the floating fish feed in 2010,” Chairman of the farm located in Lagos, Oba Adetunji Akinloye.

According to the African newspaper, Daily Independent, Akinloye said the company had taken another stride forward by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Insta-Pro Engineering U.S.A. to operate their latest Medium Shear Extruder Machine, with a capacity to handle about 1.3 tonnes per hour of fish feed or 1.5 tonnes per hour of pet food.
