The second anchovy fishing season officially ended at midnight last Friday in the north-central area of Peru, which generated a revenue of about USD 1 billion to the sector, according to the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE).

Anchovy is the main raw material of the Peruvian industry of fishmeal and fish oil, and is one of the engines of the Peruvian economy.

Minister Bruno Giuffra stressed that the implementation of a policy of responsible management of the sector during this fishing season allowed the preservation of around 300,000 tonnes of juvenile anchovy for future fishing seasons.

More than 600 supervisors inspected 22,627 landings of 755 vessels to verify the reported weights and to carry out the biometric samples of the resource.

\"The implementation of the \'Web log\' application allowed us to improve the intervention times, in the presence of juveniles from 24 to 6 hours, and immediately suspend the sea area where the species was located,\" said Giuffra.

Likewise, 96 fishing zones were closed, protecting a total area of 293,439.5 million km2 (a greater area than Ecuador).
