The Peruvian National Fisheries Society (SNP) is working to achieve the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for the anchovy’s fisheries by 2021. "This certification will strengthen the sustainable management of resources in a context where consumers are increasingly demanding," said Cayetana Aljovín, president at SNP.
The SNP was also involved in the project “Evaluation of management strategies for anchovy fishery,” that presented a model to increase the transparency of the management of this resource. The project was led by Ray Hilborn from the University of Washington and supported by the SNP, the Institute of the Sea of Peru (IMARPE) and the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE). Aljovín said that this project marks the beginning of improvements implemented to increase confidence in the management of the anchovy fishery. "Peru has made significant progress in the transparency of fisheries management and continues on that path," said Hilborn.
