A Swedish project, MultiBio, aims to establish and scale up a new multifunctional biorefinery that uses waste and process water from the pulp and paper industry and produces three renewable bio-based products: hydrogen, biopolymers and protein-rich additive to fish feed. Researchers aim to develop the bioeconomics of forest products by integrating the generation of value-added products and services from current low-value residual streams.

The reduction of waste in a pulp and paper industry is one of the main objectives of the project. Multibio will also evaluate a concept for multifunctional refineries that contributes to reach several environmental goals. Hydrogen and polymer production technology will be evaluated and further developed to use the selected streams.  The microbial biomass will be provided to perform fish feed trials.
