Biorigin, a specialist in yeast-based biotechnological processes, has published its Annual Sustainability Report, highlighting the most relevant aspects of the 2023/2024 harvest. The document presents data on Zilor and Biorigin's initiatives during the period from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024.
Biorigin's performance
Zilor achieved the highest net revenue in its 77-year history, reaching a record R$ 3.487 billion, representing an 8.3% growth compared to the previous harvest. Biorigin contributed 17% of this result, totaling R$ 604.6 million in net revenue.
The Biotechnology Unit's operations have a highly export-oriented profile, with approximately 90% of production destined for over 60 countries, serving markets in North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
In the 2023/2024 harvest, Biorigin achieved a total production of 38.1 thousand tons, of which 22.7 thousand tons were destined for the pet food, nutrition, and animal health segment, and 15.4 thousand tons for the food industry.
In terms of sales volume, a total of 32 thousand tons were commercialized, of which 12.4 thousand tons were for the food industry and 19.6 thousand tons for pet food, nutrition, and animal health.
With the aim of increasing its global presence and production capacity, an investment of R$ 70 million was approved for the Quatá unit. The project is part of Biorigin's strategic growth plan and will be implemented over the next three years, bringing more innovative and sustainable solutions.
Sustainability actions
The company is committed to environmental management initiatives, promoting actions to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the use of renewable energy sources, and managing the sustainable use of natural resources and the impact on biodiversity.
The biogenic carbon cycle, derived from the fermentation of sugarcane – the raw material used in the production of yeast and yeast extract – is a naturally sustainable process. During manufacturing, biogenic CO2 is released and subsequently reabsorbed by sugarcane plantations, forming a neutral raw material cycle. In the 2023/2024 harvest, Biorigin's biogenic carbon emissions were 14 times higher than non-biogenic carbon emissions.
Regarding emissions reporting, for the eighth consecutive year, Biorigin was recognized with the Gold Seal in the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program for disclosing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions inventory, verified by a third party in accordance with ISO 14064-3:2007 (SGS).
Another highlight is the generation of clean and renewable electricity: 100% of the electricity used by Biorigin comes from renewable sources, as does 100% of the steam used in the operations at the Quatá Unit and 97% globally (Biorigin Global). All electricity and steam consumed are generated from the Zilor's agro-industrial production process.
Additionally, 25% of the waste generated is destined for recycling and reuse, and 15% of the water used in our production process is reused.
In 2024, the company launched the Biorigin +Sustainable 2030 Program, with the aim of mobilizing knowledge, innovation, and technology to promote, in a sustainable manner, the health and well-being of people and animals. The program is structured on three pillars: Safe Supplier, Sustainability, and Product Quality. This initiative will bring together actions, objectives, and goals for the coming years.
