Can high protein distiller's dried grain replace corn and fishmeal in shrimp feeds?

A study suggests that high protein distiller’s dried grain is a good protein source for shrimp and a 20% can be used to replace corn protein concentrate or up to 15% to replace fishmeal.

A study performed by Auburn University evaluated the use of a high protein distiller’s dried grain on the growth performance of juvenile Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei.

Distiller's dried grain with solubles is a co-product of the ethanol distillery industry and has been suggested as a less expensive alternative to soybean meal. This study was performed with high protein distiller's dried grain (NexPro®, Flint Hills Resources) with higher protein level (50%) and lower level of crude fiber and lipids.

Researchers used graded levels of high protein distiller’s dried grain to replace corn protein concentrate or fishmeal. A commercially produced open‐feed formulation was also included in the trial as a reference.

Under green water conditions and in the presence of natural foods, the results indicate that high protein distiller’s dried grain is a good protein source for shrimp and 20% can be used to replace corn protein concentrate or up to 15% to replace fishmeal.
