Mara Renewables, a company delivering algae-based solutions for human and animal nutrition, raised USD 9.1 million in funding from S2G Investments. The investment will support Mara’s expansion of its omega-3 platform, deepen R&D capacity, and further scale its ability to address critical gaps across global nutrition supply chains.

Mara offers a fish-free omega-3 alternative that avoids reliance on marine resources and goes straight to the original source: microalgae. At the heart of Mara’s patented process is precision fermentation, a series of breakthrough techniques that enable microalgae to grow efficiently in controlled environments.

Mara’s algae-derived omega-3 products deliver scientifically proven health benefits through a scalable, sustainable platform. With applications across infant formula, dietary supplements, functional foods, animal health, and aquaculture nutrition, Mara’s vertically integrated platform is built to meet market needs while reducing strain on ocean resources. In 2024, Mara supplied enough algal DHA to offset an estimated 6.7 billion anchovies from the supply chain.

“At Mara, we are committed to transforming the way the world sources vital nutrients like omega-3s,” said Harry Boot, CEO of Mara. “Our partnership with S2G strengthens our ability to meet growing global demand with reliable, high-quality alternatives that protect aquatic ecosystems, reduce reliance on wild fisheries, and support the health of people and animals alike. We’re proud to have a values-aligned partner who brings deep experience and shared ambition.”

“In our view, Mara is solving a fundamental supply chain challenge with precision and scale,” said Larsen Mettler, managing director of S2G’s oceans strategy. “They have built an end-to-end platform that delivers consistent, clean, and high-quality omega-3s without relying on depleted fisheries.”

Looking ahead, the company is focused on strengthening its global manufacturing footprint through strategic partnerships, making omega-3 a seamless part of daily life by supporting customers in developing enjoyable, easy-to-consume products for direct and indirect human nutrition, and deepening commercial collaborations across key global markets.
