The company received eight EU authorizations, extensions, or renewals for its microbial solutions.

New EU authorizations for Lallemand solutions
May 27, 2020

Lallemand Animal Nutrition completed several feed additive authorizations in the European Union. Most of them pertain to zootechnical feed additives, which have received renewed authorizations — including the extension of use to new target species. In addition, the authorization of Lallemand Animal Nutrition’s selenized yeast has also been renewed, and a new silage inoculant was authorized: Lactobacillus hilgardii CNCM I-4785 (in combination with Lactobacillus buchneri NCIMB 40788), which is a breakthrough for improving the aerobic stability of silage.

“We are very pleased with these achievements. While the renewal of authorizations focuses on product identity and safety, we do continuously work beyond these requirements. Despite the fact that some of our best-known solutions are backed by decades of in-market use, we do not rest on our laurels and keep on documenting their benefits with mechanistic and field studies,” Ludovic Arnaud, regulatory affairs and compliance manager at Lallemand Animal Nutrition, said.

“Thanks to a positive evolution of EFSA requirements for “efficacy demonstration” and to the demonstration of the efficacy of our products on many livestock species, it was possible to extrapolate their use to other species. For example, the use of BACTOCELL has been extended to all avian species and all fish and crustaceans, and the use of LEVUCELL SB has been extended to all pigs. This offers better flexibility to our customers in terms of feed formulations,” Arnaud added.

“Our flagship probiotics, BACTOCELL, LEVUCELL SB and LEVUCELL SC, have been in the market for more than 20 years but are still very young and fresh and hold a promising future. Maintaining their authorization more than 20 years after their introduction, while continuing to invest significant R&D, demonstrates the commitment of Lallemand Animal Nutrition to offer the best products for the livestock and aquaculture industry,” Yannig Le Treut, general manager, Lallemand Animal Nutrition, said.

“For example, BACTOCELL (P. acidilactici CNCM I-4622 - MA 18/5M) remains, to date, the only probiotic strain authorized for use in aquaculture in the EU. We continuously document the interest of those solutions for livestock and aquaculture producers. They are not only beneficial for animal performance but have also demonstrated strong health benefits in line with market trends and needs, such as food safety, reduction of antibiotic usage in livestock and aquaculture, and more,” Le Treut added.

The EU authorizations granted in 2019/2020 are:

  • Extension of Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 (LEVUCELL SB) authorization to all pig species.
  • Authorization of Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 (LEVUCELL SB) to turkeys for fattening for the reduction of Salmonella contamination on carcasses.
  • Renewal of the use of Saccharomyces cerivisiae CNCM I-1077 (LEVUCELL SC) in dairy goats, dairy sheep, horses and lambs.
  • Renewal of the use of Pediococcus acidilactici CNCM I-4622 - MA 18/5M (BACTOCELL) in all fish and all crustaceans, including ornamental species. The CNCM codification of the Pediococcus acidilactici strain held by Lallemand has changed from MA 18/5M to CNCM I-4622.
  • Renewal of use of Pediococcus acidilactici CNCM I-4622 - MA 18/5M (BACTOCELL) in weaned piglets, pigs for fattening and extension to all porcine species other than sows.
  • Renewal of the use of Pediococcus acidilactici CNCM I-4622 - MA 18/5M (BACTOCELL) in broilers and laying hens and extension to all avian species including ornamental birds.
  • Authorization of L. hilgardii CNCM I-4785 in combination with L. buchneri NCIMB 40788 as a silage additive (Regulation (EU) No 2019/764).
  • Renewal of the use of the selenized yeast ALKOSEL in all animal species.
