Unibio opened its first commercial production facilities in Kalundborg, Denmark, in November 2016. The new U-Loop® fermentation plant was officially opened by H.R.H. Prince Joachim of Denmark. The facilities in Kalundborg produce a highly concentrated and sustainable protein, UniProtein®, to be used as a direct supplement in animal feed compounds.

The opening of the new plant marked the start of commercial production for Unibio and was an important milestone in the company´s globalization process. The Kalundborg project is co-financed by Innovation Fund Denmark, who sees great potential in Unibio´s industrial production of UniProtein®.

Unibio has now started fermentation in Kalundborg with promissing results so far. The new plant is the first step in a planned global launch of Unibio’s U-Loop® technology. The entire production of UniProtein® in the first year has already been sold to Vestjyllands Andel, a Danish animal feed manufacturer, as part of an off-take agreement.  

Commenting on achieving this significant milestone, Henrik Busch-Larsen, CEO of Unibio, said: “We are very positive about this. A second full-size commercial plant is expected to be completed and producing UniProtein® by H2 2017, after Unibio signed a licence agreement with an Eastern European-based client last year.
