BioMar introduced FINESTA, a finishing diet for seabream that intensifies skin colors before harvest. Gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) is one of the most popular fish species in the Mediterranean area. Wild seabream have attractive colors that come from their diet based on crustaceans and algae which contain natural pigments that are accumulated on the fish skin. This feature is highly appreciated by consumers and can increase the commercial value of fish.

According to Iannis Karacostas, BioMar EMEA marine product manager, “there is no doubt that today’s seabream feed is designed to meet all of the fish’s nutritional requirements for the maximum performance and good growth. Although, broadly speaking, it is true that seabream aquaculture may lack some of the attractive colors of its wild equivalent.”

As a result of intense research work and field tests carried out in collaboration with fish farmers under different production conditions, BioMar designed FINESTA, a finishing feed to intensify the skin color of seabream before harvesting.

“With FINESTA, the color appears quickly and gradually provides the appearance of wild fish. By enhancing the vibrant colors of fish, FINESTA seeks to provide added value to the fish farmer business,” concluded Karacostas.
