In June 2018, the salmon produced in the Magallanes region represented seven percent of the total harvested in Chile, a figure that this year exceeded 20%. The region currently houses 52 farm centers with an estimated annual production of 160,000 tons as of December 2020.

In this context, the general manager of Biomar Chile, Eduardo Hagedorn, participated in the recent AquaForum Magallanes and talked about the opportunities to improve feed logistics. “We have observed and participated in the growth of the salmon farming in this area and we believe that we can collaboratively help in the specific challenges that this region presents,” said Hagedorn.

Hagedorn said that there is room to advance in terms of port infrastructure and transport technology in line with other productive activities in the Magallanes area. He also stated that the use of vessels that guarantee greater safety with pneumatic unloading and satellite positioning should be promoted, as well as the advance towards the efficiency of the entire chain, with the possibility of direct routes, stock maintenance in the region, better information flow and greater synergies between customers and suppliers. Hagedorn stated that investments in port matters are necessary, but also in pontoons of greater capacity and vessels that are friendly to the environment and that contribute to reducing the CO2 emissions, as is the case in aquaculture in other countries.

“In the last three years, we have increased the volume of delivery and the quality of service for our clients in Region XII. The presence of BioFarm, led by David Perrin, as specific technical support to those who are in Magallanes on a day-to-day basis, together with the holding of face-to-face and now online technical meetings, add to our willingness to dialogue and advance to overcome the challenges of our industry,” said Michael Adler, BioMar’s commercial manager.
