In this report Globefish investigates the channels through which exchange rate risk influences seafood trade and discuss some risk-mitigating approaches. The report finds that exchange rate movements seem to have a relatively moderate impact on seafood trade flows. Other factors, such as market access, aggregate demand and ability to supply seem more important.

The 2013/14 season-average soybean price range is projected at $11.95 to $13.45, up 20 cents on both ends. The soybean meal price is projected at $425 to $465 per short ton, up 10 dollars on both ends of the range. The 2013/14 U.S. season-average farm price forecast for soybeans is narrowed 25 cents on both ends of the range to $11.75 to $13.25 per bushel based on prices reported to date. The soybean oil price is forecast at 35.5 to 39.5 cents per pound, down 2.5 cents on both ends. The soybean meal price is projected at $415 to $455 per short ton, up 15 dollars on both ends of the range. Corn ending stocks for 2013/14 are projected 161 million bushels lower at 1.6 billion. The projected 2013/14 season-average farm price for corn is unchanged at the midpoint with the range narrowed to $4.10 to $4.70 per bushel. In 2011, China became the world's largest feedstuff producer with an output of 179 million tons. The feedstuff output increased by 6.4% year on year to 191 million tons in 2012, including 161.70 million tons of compound feed (representing a year-on-year increase of 8.4%), 23.50 million tons of concentrated feed (down 7.6% year on year) and 6.2 million tons of premixed feed (up 2.5% year on year).

Corn harvested acreage declines 1.9 million acres from the September forecast, falling to 87.2 million acres. The forecast yield is advanced 5.1 bushels per acre, and the combined effect raises this month?s forecast production 146 million bushels to 13,989 million. Increased production and beginning stocks boosted corn supplies 307 million bushels. Projected feed and residual is increased 100 million bushels with the larger crop. The pace of export sales for 2013/14 have been strong, supporting a 175 million-bushel gain in projected exports for the marketing year to 1,400 million bushels. Lower corn prices make U.S. corn supplies more competitive on the world market. Ending stocks are projected 32 million bushels higher at 1,887 million bushels, more than twice last season?s carryout. World beginning stocks of corn are boosted sharply by a reduction in expected industrial use in China and other revisions to 2012/13 supply and demand. Increased production and beginning stocks for 2013/14 boost global coarse grain supply much more than use, leaving projected ending stocks for 2013/14 matching the large level reached in 2009/10.

USDA raised its U.S. soybean yield forecast for 2013/14 this month to 43 bushels per acre. Partly offset by a lower harvested area estimate, soybean production was forecast 109 million bushels higher this month to 3.258 billion. Improved soybean supplies and strong sales commitments led USDA to raise its 2013/14 export forecast by 80 million bushels to 1.45 billion. Better export demand for soybean products also helped push up the soybean crush forecast by 30 million bushels this month to 1.685 billion. Based on lower yields from excessive rainfall, USDA lowered its 2013/14 forecast of Indian soybean production this month by 500,000 metric tons to 11.8 million. A reduced supply is expected to lower the country?s soybean crush by 500,000 tons to 9.5 million tons. The subsequent constraints on soybean meal output may curtail Indian soybean meal exports in 2013/14 to 3.55 million tons, compared to 4.1 million last year.
