2022 was the best year ever for Norwegian seafood exports, according to the Norwegian Seafood Council. Norway exported 2.9 million tonnes of seafood to a value of NOK 151.4 billion last year. It is a record for export value and corresponds to 40 million meals every day - all year round.

“Norwegian seafood exports have had a historically strong year behind them. It is happening in a period characterized by war in Europe, galloping energy prices, sky-high inflation, and a weakened global purchasing power. A result of the demanding and troubled times is a sharp rise in prices, which resulted in record high prices for important species, such as salmon, cod, mackerel, trout, pollock and herring,” said Christian Chramer, CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council.

The value from aquaculture accounted for 73% of total seafood exports measured in value, while in export volume made up 45%. In 2022, Norway exported 1.3 million tonnes of seafood from aquaculture with an export value of NOK 111.3 billion. The export volume fell by 2.5% and the value increased by NOK 25.7 billion (30%) compared to 2021.

2022 was the best-ever export year for salmon with Poland, France and the USA being the largest markets for salmon. Norway exported 1,255,851 tonnes of salmon to a value of NOK 105.8 billion. The export value increased by NOK 24.6 billion (30%) compared to 2021. The export volume fell by 2%.

In 2022, there was a record-high price for fresh salmon fillets, reaching NOK 117 per kg, NOK 13 per kg higher than the previous record year, which was 2019.

2022 was also a record year for trout. Norway exported 54,979 tonnes of trout worth NOK 5 billion in 2022. The value increased by NOK 972 million (24%) compared to 2021 but the volume fell by 13%. The USA, Thailand and Lithuania were the largest markets for trout in 2022.
