Innovafeed has been certified as a B Corporation™ by B Lab. The B Corp™ certification is a rigorous and comprehensive assessment process based on five impact pillars: Environment, Customers, Workers, Governance and Community. Innovafeed has demonstrated an outstanding impact on the Environment pillar, in particular, thanks to its innovative production model referred to as Industrial Symbiosis – the black soldier fly production process.
Through this symbiosis model, 120 GWh can be saved by Innovafeed and its suppliers every year, which represents the annual energy consumption of more than 10,000 households and contributes to the avoidance of 57 000 T of CO2eq in GHG emissions, according to the company’s LCA published in 2020.
In addition to its environmental impact, Innovafeed’s model also contributes positively to generating local social impact through regional industrial recovery. Since 2019, more than 200 jobs were generated in the Hauts de France region.
Beyond B Corp™ certification
This certification is a key milestone in Innovafeed’s journey to generate a more positive impact on society but not an end goal. In order to continue pursuing this ambition, Innovafeed has created a dedicated governance structure via an Impact Committee which will report to Innovafeed’s board of directors.
The committee will be chaired by Darian McBain, with more than 20 years of sustainability work and will be made up equally of internal and external members. Maye Walraven has been nominated as Innovafeed’s chief impact officer to specifically coordinate this committee. This committee will be responsible for defining and supporting Innovafeed’s Impact strategy.
“This B Corp™ certification is the result of the company’s strong commitment to generate a natural, sustainable and resilient new industry and the efforts of the entire Innovafeed team to make this vision a reality. I would like to thank and congratulate our exceptional team as well as the many partners (financial, business, and other stakeholders) that support us in building a large-scale insect product industry that will address tomorrow’s food challenges while ensuring a positive impact,” said Walraven.
