Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), commonly known as \"early mortality syndrome\" (EMS), is considered to be the most serious non-viral disease of cultured shrimp. A number of Asian and Latin American countries are affected by AHPND and it is strongly suspected that the disease is present, but largely unreported, in other countries in both regions. Convened by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), participants from 16 member states, along with specialists and producers from the shrimp farming sector, recently gathered at a special international seminar in the Thai capital Bangkok to discuss the disease’s evolution and consider a way forward in combating it.

The drive to control sea lice through non-medicinal approaches has taken another step forward with the start of a new £2.12m lumpsucker project, co-funded by the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC). Spanning three years, the research project aims to tackle a range of commercial bottlenecks and objectives, supported by a much better understanding of lumpsucker biology and behavior in captivity. “While evidence from farms clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of lumpsuckers at consuming sea lice, research is required to improve the reliability of this innovative biological pest management strategy.”

Researchers at the University of Seville, in collaboration with the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training and Fisheries (IFAPA) have analyzed the diet of two types of caprellids, tiny marine organisms that serve as food for fish. Results found that they are able to reuse the feces of other species, which makes them a sustainable and affordable option for aquaculture industries.

The governments of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Honduras have signed a memorandum of understanding to implement tilapia farming project in floating cages installed on the Gulf of Fonseca. As part of this initiative, four floating cages will be installed in brackish waters of the Gulf of Fonseca and provide technology training to more than a hundred people. In addition, two groups of fishermen will be organized in the area to improve their management capacity.

Fishing for anchovy started late this year in the main producing area of Peru, and the supply of fish meal used as an ingredient in feed for farmed fish is unstable. Japanese feed companies are on the lookout for alternative sources of feed ingredients. Development of fish feeds containing less fishmeal is also advancing.

A new Fish Nutrition Research Unit has opened at the WorldFish Abbassa Research Center, in Egypt. The facility will focus on tilapia nutrition and testing of new, local fish feed ingredients, including agricultural by-products. The launch is just one result of a partnership between WorldFish and Skretting, which also entails the construction of an advanced recirculation system for R&D.
