The Hawaii Aquaculture and Aquaponics Association (HAAA) hosted a banquet on May 24 2016 to honor the work of both researchers, who have each spent over four decades working to address various aquaculture issues ranging from larval rearing to feed. According to one farmer in attendance, “the aquaculture industry in Hawaii wouldn’t be the same without these two gentlemen, period.”

Cargill\'s new animal nutrition plant in Nghe An will provide feed for livestock and will have a total capacity of 66,000 metric tons per year. Soon fish farmers in West Africa will be able to enjoy regular supply of moderately priced feed thanks to Olam\'s International’s $150 million integrated animal feed mill, breeding farms and hatchery project, expected to start operations next year. CSIC researchers identified that blocking the hormone system in zebrafish results in larger fish and greater feed efficiency. Specimens in the study fed the same amount of food as unmodified fish showed increases of up to 60% in weight and 15% in length.

People living in the area around a planned £80million fish feed plant on Skye are being given the opportunity to comment on the proposal at drop-in sessions next month. The proposed Marine Harvest plant at Kyleakin quarry would create 55 full-time, permanent jobs.

A new two-phase scoping study, initiated by the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) in partnership with Highlands and Island Enterprise (HIE), launched this week at Aquaculture UK to canvass industry opinion on a proposed Centre of Excellence. \"We’re not going into this with any preconceived ideas – we want to find out what the industry needs in order to grow towards 2030 and beyond...”

Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) will explore the potential of a novel approach to delouse farmed salmon and, ultimately, increase harvest volumes. A six-month project will research the efficacy of ultrasound in targeting and dislodging naturally occurring sea lice in a non-invasive and non-harmful way.

AquaBounty Technologies, Inc. announced that Health Canada concluded its review of the AquAdvantage Salmon (AAS) and has approved it for commercial sale in Canada. Additionally, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has determined that feed ingredients derived from AAS do not present livestock feed safety or nutrition concerns when compared with feeds derived from other permitted salmon to be used as livestock feed in Canada.

Domestic fish production in Bangladesh has been steadily growing during recent years, however the country has yet to start reaping the benefits from economically utilizing fish scraps. A committee of experts has advised that the country should handle fish scraps as food grade for use as raw materials for different by-products like fish meal, fish oil, pet feed, cytosine, or chitin etc.

Following a comprehensive three-year multi-institutional study, researchers are calling for a review of EU legislation that currently prohibits the use of insects as a protein source in animal feed. Among other results, their study found that common house fly larvae can be used to replace up to 50% of fish meal without affecting fish performance or proximate compositions of the whole body of Atlantic salmon parr.

Raisio will invest nearly four million euros to expand its fish feed factory located in Finland. The factory will have a new production line that increases production capacity by a third and improves technical features of feeds. Construction of the new production line will begin in the summer of 2016 and will be completed in the spring of 2017. The investment will improve the materials as well as the energy efficiency of Raisioaqua feeds, with new energy consumption expected to be around 30 per cent less than it is today.
