E.U. - Environment: new guidelines for aquaculture and nature protection

The Commission is issuing new guidelines to improve understanding of how aquaculture can be carried out inside Natura 2000, the EU-wide network of protected natural areas. The guidelines explain how best to ensure that activities related to aquaculture are compatible with EU nature legislation and Natura 2000 provisions in particular. They emphasize the significance of the aquaculture sector for food production, and highlight the key role of the Natura 2000 network in delivering the objectives of EU Biodiversity policy. The guidelines focus on the implementation of the provisions on appropriate assessment under the Habitats Directive

University of Aberdeen researchers are to compare the effects on human health of eating farmed salmon fed two different diets. The scientists want to see whether feeding farmed fish a more sustainable feed containing more vegetable oils but less omega-3 fatty acids, and possibly other nutrients, has any impact on potential health benefits in those eating the fish.

The new BAP standards have a very wide scope and now apply to all types of production systems that raise finfish or crustaceans, with the exception of salmonids reared in cages, for which separate standards exist. This reflects a shift from the current species-specific BAP standards that are separately tailored for shrimp, tilapia, Pangasius and catfish. Deadline for Comments: Jan. 31, 2013
