During Aquafeed Horizons 2018, David Tze, NovoNutrients, presented data on novel single cell proteins and their use as a replacement for fishmeal. In addition to sharing general information on the technology, Mr. Tze discussed the process his company is using to turn a true waste stream – industrial gases –into a viable feed product. “NovoNutrients has done work using real flu gas in the field and from the field to develop proprietary strains that are flu gas resistant. Strains that don’t just thrive on lab gases, but actually have the ability to metabolize a lot of impurities that are found in what’s coming out of the chimneys of a cement plant, for example, or gases from an oil and gas refining operation that would otherwise be flare. We’ve seen an increase in growth rates of three fold in some propriety strains.“

The use of insects in aquatic feeds has recently been approved in both Europe and the United States, and the idea is growing in popularity across the globe. During his presentation at Aquafeed Horizons 2018, Tarique Arsiwalla, founder of Protix, shared his insights on the benefits of using insects to feed aquatic species, especially carnivorous fish. “Insects are a very natural source of nutrients for fish in the wild, particularly carnivorous fish. Trout, for example, are used to catching insects of different sorts in the wild. Wild salmon also eat insects in the freshwater stage. It completely makes sense to start using them now that the availability it really there.” 

At last week’s Aquafeed Horizons conference, Dr. Benedict Standen, Biomin, discussed the benefits of in-feed probiotics and summarized results from recent trials, including probiotic application at the feed mill. “If you are successful in getting the probiotics into the diet itself, there are a number of opportunities for using them, which depend on the specific strain of probiotics. Bacillus probiotics are very good at producing different enzymes which can help with feed conversion, digestibility, and proven growth performance. Lactic acid bacteria can attach to the epithelia, improving immunity, fighting pathogens, and improving disease resistance.”

During his presentation at Aquafeed Horizons 2018, Maarten Jay van Schoonhoven discussed the serious concerns and treatment solutions for mycotoxin contamination. Mycotoxins are especially dangerous when more than one is present. “If you have different types of mycotoxins that work synergistically, they might all be below the allowed limits but together in the long term they will cause reduced performances in feed and reduce health status, allowing the disease to have larger impact.\"

Fish farmers in the Philippines have asked SEAFDEC to help supply them with local and low-cost feeds to battle high aquaculture production costs, as feeds alone take about 60 percent of the cost. The department said that low-cost and sustainable ingredients can improve fish growth, survival, production, and, eventually boost the income of small-scale farmers throughout Southeast Asian countries. It is now assessing the ingredients around these countries in terms of availability, sourcing sustainability, nutritional requirements, proper use of ingredients and cost-effectiveness.

Local fish feed producers in Lagos State are lauding the upsurge in local fish feed production due to major increases in the cost of purchasing foreign feeds and high inflation rates. The cost of foreign feeds has increased from N3,000 per bag to N10,000 per bag, amounting to a 233.3% increase. “The rise in local fish production has led to newer innovations in the combination of fish feed components. The inflation led to the innovation in local fish feed production and has benefited the local fish farmer immensely. The importation of foreign fish feed has dropped drastically, as most feeds in the market currently are locally produced.\"

The former North American Edible Insects Coalition has changed its name to the North American Coalition for Insect Agriculture and is shifting its focus: NACIA will make the case for using insects as animal feed for a wide variety of creatures, from fish to farm animals. The group is reorganizing as a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit with a mission to become “a consolidated voice to encourage the positive growth of insects as both feed and food.”
