Cornell scientist and educator Philson Warner developed a system for continuously re-circulating and reconditioning water to raise more than 10,000 tilapia and other fish at a time in a Manhattan basement lab. The nutrient-rich water from the fish is then transferred to a hydroponic garden located a few floors up on campus. That garden produces nine types of lettuce, Chinese cabbage such as bok choi, and a variety of herbs that include sweet basil, oregano, thyme and parsley. HCMC – Vietnamese seafood exports surged in 2014 with an export turnover of US$7.9 billion, the highest levels in three years. This exceeded the target of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) by US$920 million and was an 18.4 percent increase on 2013. The main seafood exports from Vietnam, by value of exports, are frozen shrimp, pangasius catfish, tuna and other fish, mollusks and crustaceans.

A “puzzling” flat-lining in the production of aquafeed in 2014, despite sustained growth in the consumer demand for farmed fish, has been revealed in the latest Alltech global feed survey which was based on data collected from more than 31,000 feed mills in some 130 countries.
