USA - Expanding U.S. Aquaculture to the Open Ocean

Allowing the U.S. aquaculture industry to operate in the open ocean could help reduce the strain on the world’s fisheries as well as counteract a seafood trade deficit in the U.S. that has grown to more than $9 billion. In the process, however, open ocean aquaculture could cause environmental damage and further jeopardize wild fisheries.

AFRICA - Insect feed among joint Australian and Canadian research projects to address food insecurity

Research in Kenya and Uganda to test the feasibility of raising poultry and fish on feed made from insects rather than soybeans and cereals, is one of five projects announced by Canada\'s International Development Research Centre and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research to address food security in Eastern and Southern Africa. The switch will help to reduce costs for small-scale producers and redirect the food crops currently used as feed toward human consumption.
El Niño Update: Chances for weak to moderate El Niño move higher

There is an approximately 65% chance that El Niño conditions will be present during the Northern Hemisphere winter and last into the Northern Hemisphere spring 2015, NOAA\'s latest El Niño climate predictions show. This is up from 58% predicted in the November report. Australian authorities say there is at least a 70% chance that El Niño will be declared in the coming months.

He has an explicit mandate to promote blue growth and green growth – to deliver more sustainable jobs in Europe. This new set-up clarifies even further that sustainable aquaculture and protection of the environment are two sides of the same coin. Aquaculture in Europe is already worth 3.5 billion Euro, with 85000 jobs – and it has substantial growth opportunities if we get the investment and marketing climate right.

The European Food Safety Authority Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed has completed a re-evaluation of calcium formate for use as a preservative in feed for all animal species and categories, including fish. The panel determined that no adverse effects on target animals safety are anticipated when calcium formate is used at the maximum proposed dose.

The American Feed Industry Association today addressed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration during a public meeting on the four re-proposed Food Safety Modernization Act rules. AFIA and the 575 members it represents--which will be heavily affected by the rule -submitted comments to FDA in March and are taking the additional time provided to prepare feedback on the supplemental proposed rules published Sept. 29.
