CANADA - 'Superchill' kills fish at Cooke Aquaculture sites in Nova Scotia

Cold weather caused a large number of fish deaths for Cooke Aquaculture in Nova Scotia last week. Three aquaculture sites are reporting fish mortalities from extreme cold water temperatures -the Port Wade aquaculture sites in the Annapolis Basin, Shelburne Harbour and Jordan Bay.

Greater access for New Zealand to Asian food markets through research and knowledge exchanges between Massey University and a Thai food conglomerate is on the cards. The prospect of stronger links with Thailand in the agrifood sector was championed in a speech by one of Thailand’s most successful business leaders, Dhanin Chearavanont. He was recognised by the University with a Doctor of Science (honoris causa) at a ceremony at the Manawatū campus. The degree was in recognition for his services to international business and philanthropic activities.

A new pan-African project has been launched to strengthen the continent’s great potential for increased trade in fish. Africa, a continent that is endowed with plentiful fish resources in oceans, rivers, lakes, floodplains and fish farms accounts for just 4.9% of global fish trade. More efficient trade could significantly improve income and nutrition for millions of Africans, particularly those 12.3 million that are directly employed in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

Cargill Mexico Invests $7.8 Million in Aquafeed Extrusion Line

As part of the celebrations for its 150th global anniversary and 50 years of operations in Mexico, Cargill Mexico inaugurated the expansion of its feed mill in Tehuacán, Puebla. The expansion is the result of a $7.8 million dollar investment,Gerardo Quintero, Managing Director of Cargill’s Feed & Nutrition business for Mexico and Central America said. The expansion consists of a new extrusion line that will produce feed for tilapia, trout and catfish.
