New research shows that farmed fish and shellfish production will likely need to increase by 133 percent between 2010 and 2050 in order to meet projected fish demand worldwide. In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, Pilmico International Pte. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc. (AEV) said it will purchase 70% equity interest in Vinh Hoan 1 Feed JSC (VHF) from Vinh Hoan Corp. (VHC). The company said it would acquire the remaining 30% within five years at an already agreed price for a total transaction of for $28 million.
USA - Research Finds Soybean-Asian Carp Feed Blend More Sustainable for Aquaculture Industry

Combining soybean meal with fish meal made from invasive Asian carp produces a more nutritious, sustainable and economical option for feeding some farm-raised fish, according to recent Southern Illinois University (SIU) research. Both lab and on-farm feeding trial research, funded by the Illinois soybean checkoff through the Illinois Soybean Association (ISA), show species like hybrid striped bass and largemouth bass can effectively digest higher amounts of soybean meal when blended with meal derived from Asian carp.
AUSTRALIA - Tropical Pacific Ocean edges further toward El Niño

The tropical Pacific Ocean continues a general trend toward El Niño, Australia\'s Bureau of Meteorology announced. Just over half of the climate models surveyed by the Bureau suggesting El Niño thresholds will be exceeded by August. An El Niño ALERT remains in place, indicating at least a 70% chance of an El Niño developing in 2014.

Chance of El Niño increasing, NOAA confirms

The model predictions of ENSO for this summer and beyond are indicating an increased likelihood of El Niño compared with those from last month, NOAA\'s Climate Prediction Center reported May 8, 2014. Most of the models indicate that ENSO-neutral will persist through part of the remainder of the Northern Hemisphere spring 2014 most likely transitioning to El Niño during the summer. There remains uncertainty as to exactly when El Niño will develop and an even greater uncertainty as to how strong it may become.
NORWAY - Larger salmon smolts produce healthier fat

Farmed salmon is rich in fat, but fillets of farmed salmon contain less marine omega-3 than previously, because a large fraction of the fish oil in the feed has been replaced by plant oil. Scientists have discovered a way of stimulating farmed salmon to convert plant oil in the feed to marine omega-3. This means that farmed salmon may become a net producer of marine omega-3.

EU - EFSA Proposes Reduction of Maximum Levels of Zinc in Feed

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has proposed a reduction of the maximum permitted content of zinc in feed for all animal species, including fish. EFSA said the reduction in maximum permitted content of zinc in feed ensures consumer safety, animal health and welfare, and does not affect animal productivity
